Satellite TV

Satellite TV is a television system whereby a broadcast center sends a signal containing TV programs to a satellite in orbit above the earth.

The satellite captures the signal and sends it back to earth, where it is picked up by a satellite dish and relayed to a TV set.

In order to receive a satellite TV signal you must have a satellite system — a dish to capture the signal, and a receiver to unscramble the signal and send it to your television.

Satellite TV History

In 1962, the first satellite TV signal was sent from Europe to North America via the Telstar satellite. The first first commercial satellite, Early Bird, was launched in 1965, and Satellite TV reception in the U.S. began in 1980.

Early satellite TV systems were expensive, costing anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000. The dishes were large — 10 to 12 feet in diameter — and the receivers and antenna rotators were bulky and complicated.

In 1994 the first DBS (direct broadcast satellite) was put into orbit, issuing in the era of the mini dish and the slim-line receiver, making it possible for anyone, even apartment renters and condo owners, to have satellite TV.

Quotes from the Beatles almost never happened as the band was originally called the Blackjacks. The band that was to become The Beatles started in 1957 with John Lennon, then only sixteen, was a skiffle group named the Blackjacks, which then became The Quarrymen after they realized that another local group was already named the Blackjacks.

This band consisted of Lennon and some friends from school until Paul McCartney, then fifteen joined them and shortly thereafter a fourteen year old George Harrison also joined as lead guitarist. The band was short lived and by 1960 only John, Paul, and George remained.

John had started at the Liverpool College of Art and the three guitarists were playing whenever they could find a drummer.

A fellow student of john’s at the college, Stu Sutcliffe, then joined the band playing bass. It was Stu that suggested changing the band name to “The Beetles” as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets as Buddy Holly had recently died in a plane crash.

They tried other names first such as “Johnny and the Moondogs”, and “The Silver Beatles”, until they shortened it to “The Beatles” The Beatles still did not have a full-time drummer which was a problem when the group got a resident band booking in Hamburg, Germany. Before they left they auditioned and hired Pete Best and the five-piece band left for Hamburg four days later. The booking was for club owner Bruno Koschmider, and was for a 48-night residency.

This arrangement lasted from August until December of 1960 when John, Paul, George and Pete returned to Liverpool Stu Sutcliffe remained in Hamburg with his new German fiancee, Astrid Kirchherr, for another month before returning. While still in Germany, Kirchherr, cut Sutcliffe’s hair in the German “exi” or existentialist style popular at the time, which later became the look adopted by the other Beatles.

A few months later Stu Sutcliffe left the band to resume his art studies in Germany, this is when Paul switched to the bass and the Beatles were a four piece band.

In 1962 The Beatles had their first recording session under the direction of George Martin but Martin didn’t like Pete’s drumming and suggested the band use a session drummer in the studio but their manager Brian Epstein replaced him with Ringo Starr and The Beatles were together until they broke up in 1970.
