Some times in poetry it is hard to decipher what the poet is really saying. With some knowledge of church history and my researching on the net, I submit briefly what I believe Richard Thompson is saying in this spiritual poetry. To read a more indept understanding, go to my web site, pagefrompage.com/wheel.html Richard Thompson was writing about the medieval era Christians being persecuted for one’s faith. Though now Islam, he wrote the poem when he was a Christian and from a Christian standpoint. We know that historically persicutions happened to many by many groups and denominations and within the denomination. Their idea was “If you don’t agree with my spin on Christianity that makes you a heretic and therefore a candidate for torture, or worse, put to death for one’s faith or belief.” One has to remember that the times were very, very different then, and people certainly had a much, much different mindset than we have today. Somehow in many ways Jesus’ concept of “Love thy neighbor” had gone out the window. Some say what they say about some in Islam, but study how Christians treated Christians who had a different view. We are not the Judge and there are no lawyers at the gates. Hopefully and thankfully we have grown and exercise more tolerance.
