EDDIE PALMIERI – TEMA DEL APOLLO
Raised in New York City of Puerto Rican and Italian ancestry, Palmieri has led Latin jazz and dance bands for over forty years, and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Though he’s ranged across the stylistic map and back again, generally his bands combine jazz improvisation and harmonic sophistication with an unstoppable Latin groove. Palmieri himself is an incredible piano player, dramatic and percussive, deeply influenced by McCoy Tyner but very much an individual talent. He’s had his ups and downs over the years, and his body of work reflects that, but when he’s at his best there’s nobody better, and he’s been at his best very often. Eddie Palmieri’s Conjunto La Perfecta was one of the most respected and beloved bands during the 1960s and early ’70s because it epitomized perfection. The perfect blend of originality and tradition. Eddie Palmieri, Barry Rogers, Manny Oquendo, Ismael Quintana, Tommy Lopez, Jose Rodrigues, Dave Perez and George Castro worked together to create a sound that was a favorite of the dance crazed public of the 60′s Palladium in NYC and became an instant classic through Latin America. La Perfecta was arguably the most influential salsa band out of the 60′s NY. Rock solid tight for the dancers feet and jazzy for the discerning ears, full of spontaneity and so swinging and some of George Castro best flute work!!! El Tema del Apollo – (2:33).. The song is a rico cha cha ha.. One of the most best and most perfect of it’s kind. Eddie Palmieri (Piano … |

The Eddie Palmieri Shooting Story
Well folks….. this is the story so far Feuding Queens woman, 81, tries to kill Latin-jazz great Eddie Palmieri’s wife Iraida Palmieri. Here the Daliy news version = by Thomas Zambito, Joe Kemp and Bill Hutchinson DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS An 81-year-old Queens woman tried to kill Latin-jazz great Eddie Palmieri’s wife, shooting her in a dispute fueled by jealousy, noise complaints and ethnic tensions, authorities said. Geriatric gunslinger Maria Cartagena fired once at Iraida Palmieri, 73, grazing her head Tuesday night near the elevator in their Forest Hills condo building, officials said. “Move over or I’m gonna kill ya!” she repeatedly yelled before pulling a .38-caliber revolver from a fanny pack and firing once, according to law enforcement sources. Cartagena believed Iraida Palmieri had made romantic advances toward her husband, Rafael Cartagena, 60, a source said. Rafael Cartagena, a city bus driver, denied a romance with the victim, saying the feud was really about noisy neighbors. “These people were banging on the floor at all hours,” Rafael Cartagena said last night. “My wife was on the brink of a nervous breakdown.” The Palmieris live one floor above the Cartagenas at 100-26 67th Road. The women have lodged numerous noise complaints against each other on the city’s 311 line, law enforcement sources and neighbors said. Rafael Cartagena said the feud also stemmed from the fact that he and his wife are Dominican while the Palmieris are Puerto Rican. “She [Iraida ... |

EDDIE PALMIERI – LA MALANGA – Music Video
Superimposition (1971) Most of the disc, though is no-bones-about-it salsa, right from the high-powered “La Malanga” through concert staples “Bilongo” and “Chocolate Ice Cream.” The leader isn’t as out-front as usual, giving the band (particularly the horn section) plenty of space rather than relying on his own solo prowess. The traditional “Pa’ Huele,” which would have fit comfortably on his mid-60s albums, is a nice change of pace amid the more modern sounds here. Quintana’s the main vocalist, though many of the tunes are instrumentals. Palmieri has made better albums, but he covers a lot of bases here, and every cut is decent to outstanding. (DBW) |

EDDIE PALMIERI – PALO DE MANGO Music Video
Champagne… was a transitional album from 1968 One that retained tracks with the two-trombone Perfecta. But had others that looked forward. a touch of proto-Latin-funk. Now this number is a “Boogaloo” dance form. The history of Boogaloo is as follows… In the 1950s and 60s, African Americans in the United States listened to various styles of music, including jump blues, R&B and doo-wop. Puerto Ricans in New York City shared in these tastes, but also listened to genres like mambo or chachacha. There was a mixing of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, African Americans and others in clubs, whose bands tried to find common musical ground. Boogaloo was a result of this search, a marriage of many styles including Cuban son montuno, guajira, guaracha and mambo and most uniquely, American R&B and soul. Boogaloo can be seen as “the first Nuyorican music” (René López), and has been called “the greatest potential that Cuban rhythms had to really cross over in terms of music” (Izzy Sanabria). Styles like doo wop also left a sizable influence, through Tony Pabón (of Pete Rodríguez Band), Bobby Marín, King Nando, Johnny Colón and ( of course) The Palmieri Bros. Though boogaloo did not become mainstream nationwide until later in the decade, two early Top 20 hits came in 1963: Mongo Santamaría’s performance of the Herbie Hancock piece Watermelon Man and Ray Barretto’s El Watusi. Inspired by these two successes, a number of bands began imitating their infectious rhythms (which were Latinized R&B … |
