A marvelous duet by two of the all-time great jazz vocalists. This seldom heard song is from the 1981 Burt Reynolds film “Sharky’s Machine” (truly one of his best big screen efforts). The incredible soundtrack also includes songs by Chet Baker, Randy Crawford, Peggy Lee, Julie London, The Manhattan Transfer, Doc Severinsen, and others. Most of the songs were specially recorded for the movie. Disappointingly, it has yet to be issued on CD. “Before You” is one of my favorite songs. Enjoy!

The Cascais Jazz Festival was the first jazz festival held in Portugal and was founded in November 1971 by Luís Villas-Boas (the man who initiated jazz in Portugal) and João Braga (an important fado singer). It was held between 1971 and 1988 having presented musicians like Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Sarah Vaughan, Cannonball Adderley, BB King, Woody Herman and many other. Sarah Vaughan – Lover Man
The credit for writing this song goes to three men, Jimmy Davis, Ram Ramirez and Jimmy Sherman, although it’s a bit fuzzy who actually wrote what. It was published in 1942, but because of a musician’s dispute wasn’t recorded until 1944 by the great Billie Holliday. This is arguably one of the dozen or so jazz masterpieces of all time sung here by Sarah Vaughan who gives a reading of it that’s in a class with the original Billie Holliday recording.
