Gloomy Sunday – Sarah Vaughan
“Gloomy Sunday” is a somber ballad originally penned as “the Hungarian suicide song.” More modern lyrics (Sam Lewis) made it a jazz standard, albeit not that popular perhaps due to it’s dark message. Sarah Vaughan, in (arguably) her prime, gives this 1961 recording from “The Divine One”. She had a vocal range equivalent to some present day divas, but with the good taste not to slap one in the face (ears) with the prize.
